My classroom is composed of a diverse special education population in a public school. My students are non-verbal and struggle daily with communication. Many of these students do not have basic picture recognition and struggle with making choices throughout the day to communicate what they know or what they need. This puts them at a huge disadvantage and often leads to frustration when they are not understood. Within the classroom I provide a wide range of visuals to encourage the students to explore and communicate. I use highly modified materials to encourage their participation in all activities and use available technology to help them better access their curriculum. I am always searching for new fun and interactive ways to present activities and promote participation.
