This literacy unit that uses the historical fiction, Newberry Medal/Coretta Scott King award winner, The Watsons Go to Birmingham for teaching perseverance and many other literacy skills and strategies will provide my students with a rich learning opportunity. From vocabulary practice, comprehension/close reading lessons, written expression, and other literacy skills, students will connect with what they care reading and be able to also make deeper connections with text. With many of my students being struggling readers, they struggle to find books they enjoy. I know with support during this unit and the focus book being a subject of interest, students will make gains in reading.
