My aim for this Donors Choose is threefold. First as an educator in a rough neighborhood, my aim is to create a safe, calm, and welcoming space for my students. I want them to feel comfy, calm, and welcome as they explore their love of literature. Second I want students to see themselves in a book. I want them to see African American girls and boys, I want them to see similar social situations. Last, I want students to have new books! We do not have a library, and thus our books are old, most outdated, and tattered. All students deserve to have an updated library experience.
Through this Donors Choose you will be bringing new literature and cozy spaces to a classroom of determined and eager students. They will be able to explore these carefully selected texts and reflect on new places, people, and experiences. It is imperative that my student see African American girls and boys in the picture books and chapter books they are reading.
