I will be using these materials to make my classroom come to life during our study of the California Gold Rush. Each student will be assigned a role to embody throughout our entire unit of study. Each role will be a prominent person in history during the Gold Rush era such as John Sutter, John Marshall, Levi Strauss, Virginia Reed, etc. My students need these books in order to conduct research on everyday life in the Gold Rush era and specific research on their roles. During the unit, they will be documenting their journey west in diaries, which we will make in class.
I will be transforming my classroom into covered wagons. The students will be earning Sutter bucks, which can be traded in for prizes. We will be collaborating with the class next door in order to teach our students about cooking during this time period. At the end of the unit, each student will give an oral presentation on their character's experience of their journey westward.
