I work at a STEM school and we are working toward a 1:1 technology ratio meaning every student in the school has access to their own device that connects to the internet, be it a tablet or laptop/Chromebook. We have started with the upper grade students and will begin slowly trickling down to the primary students as funds allow. What this means for my 2nd grade students is that we are last in line and we only have access to the computer labs. This inequity affects my students as children in more affluent neighborhoods have access to technology as young as Pre-K.
My young students need the same access to technology as older children and those who are fortunate enough to attend schools with more resources. With our new kindles, we will begin to build a technology foundation in the classroom and while they will share the devices in the beginning, this isn't the last stop!My students will use the tablets to access learning programs, eBooks, and websites from their seats without having to travel to our school's computer labs and leave their learning environment.
