Over 50% of the students come from low-income households and/or poverty. Their basic needs are not met before they arrive at school. It is important to meet the students where they are and bring them forward. I teach Algebra in my classroom with flexible seating, home-like atmosphere, soft lighting the growth mindset. Creating a safe, positive, encouraging environment for adolescents to explore math concepts with minimal anxiety. There are up to 28 students sitting in this classroom for up to 80 minutes. The students come with tremendous anxiety about learning Algebra lessons which can manifest itself into behavior problems, missing assignments, distracting others, and low self-esteem. My teaching philosophy is rooted in building trust, creating relationships and being a "treasure hunter" for kids who need hope.
