This movie is made and set in our city. It touches on very real issues that are relevant to our community: gentrification, police brutality and harassment, opportunities available to young people of color, and the long-lasting effects of being impacted by the criminal justice system. It is also creative, funny, and highlights what is so special about Oakland. We will take students to this showing in groups led by advisory teachers, and then have structured discussions and reflection about the film. This ties to unit many of us are teaching related to injustice, community and identity, and the criminal justice system.
We want to use this film to launch important discussions about these issues with our students, and give them tools to reflect on the issues as well appreciate the incredible talent, creativity, and love that is present in our communities. This is not often the narrative shown about Oakland, and the representation in this film is incredibly important for our students. Additionally, as a continuation school we always look for ways to engage our students and help them feel that they are an important part of our community (after being pushed out of their previous schools), and this will be a great community-building activity.
