Pen and paper continue to be powerful tools. However, we are preparing students to be civically minded and engaged citizens. Although our program focuses on math, science, and technology, we remain committed to holistically supporting our students' growth. Through our social studies classes, our students are learning to connect mathematical and scientific skills to the analysis of our society. Well-rounded future doctors, engineers, scientists, and politicians can be more innovative, empathetic, and prepared to address the needs of our society. Access to technology is access to tools needed to change the world.
The 11th grade class will conduct Youth Participatory Action Research projects focused on identifying and addressing issues impacting their communities. The laptops will be used to analyze peer reviewed articles, government studies, write their research paper, and create presentations for their culminating symposium that will take place at their school site and a world class research university. Additionally, they will continue to use the laptops to compile stories from community members to complete a textbook that reflects the lived experiences of the people they interact with every day. As the students refine their skills, they will be able to use additional technologies such as coding and geographic information systems to improve the living conditions of people from their community.
