Through flexible seating, it will allow my students to be in an environment that encourages greater collaboration, enable new teaching strategies (e.g. experiential or cooperative learning), reduce extended sitting, and help students focus through the frequent adjustments, rather than a fixed environment through traditional seating. Currently, with limited funds at my school site, students are learning through the traditional seating, and other options in the classroom such as sitting or laying on the floor with clipboards or whiteboards. Although my students are patient and flexible with working in the type environment we currently have, it doesn't mean they deserve the bare minimum.
With flexible seating, my students will have better seating choices, along with feeling empower by making choices of their own and having control to fit their needs. With the new seatings, such as the bean bags, pillows, and lap desk, it enables alternative seating that will give students comfort. An uncomfortable student is often distracted and unproductive. For example, imagine a student who didn’t get to eat breakfast. As lunch time approaches, the sound of his or her growling stomach will make it impossibly hard to hear the teacher’s voice. An uncomfortable chair can have the same effect. Flexible seating will make a difference in my students learning because it encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive in order to learn!
