I teach 30 students at a time for a 3-4 week enrichment class. The focus of our class is makerspace projects--that is, using math, science, and art to produce different projects. The materials requested will be used throughout the year for students to create paper circuits. Using knowledge of electricity, students will plan and make circuits to power an LED diode. This circuit, however, will be hidden in a paper creation of the student's choosing. Students can make greeting cards that light up, glowing paper flowers, interactive posters, and a host of other options.
The materials I have selected will give the hundreds of students I see throughout the year the chance to actually make something they can share and show off. Because students will be learning new skills to make their creations, there will be some trial and error. Having these materials available gives students the space to try, fail, problem solve, and try again. These are important skills students do not always get the chance to practice. This is also an opportunity for students to be creative and try new things!
