I hear from teachers and parents regularly about the mental health concerns they have for students. With the ever increasing amount of challenges that children deal with at younger ages, I strive to provide support for students who for example may be grieving the loss of a family member, dealing with a bully, who are anxious about class, who are considering suicide, whose parents are divorcing, or who are afraid because of a recent school shooting. Through class lessons and during counseling I teach students about challenges and concepts by using books, I work to help students identify how they are feeling using mindfulness recordings, and I teach them coping strategies like breathing and journaling to deal with their challenges. Our current struggle despite our best effort is provide social/emotional and mental health support for more than 800 students with one mental health worker and 27 teachers that lack the tools to do so.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student mental health and wellbeing, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement. When students receive the social/emotional and mental health support that they are in need of, they then are able to accomplish the academic requirements of school. I want to teach and empower teachers in my school by providing them with two Strength and Wellness Toolboxes per grade to be shared and used in classrooms (Pre K - 6th). By having these books, breathing tools like feathers and pinwheels and recordings, and tools like mood charts and stress balls and journals, more students will receive the support they are in need of in their classrooms.
