If a picture is worth a thousand words, who better to be the author of a city than the young adults who live, eat, and go to school in a city itself? The goal of this photography project is multilayered. In addition to giving youth the opportunity to capture their lives in still shots,
incorporating photography into my Special Education class aims to help youth use photography as a medium of expression and as means to gain skills that translate to their journey as scholars. The process of taking, filtering through, editing, and creating themes with photos is similar to the process students undertake when they write expository essays or when they use empirical evidence to support a hypothesis.
Additionally, by learning how to adjust the various settings on a camera (ISO, aperture, focal length, and shutter speed) students will be learning how to utilize proportions and ratios in order to achieve the perfect photograph.
