I teach a remedial reading class, and all of my students, without exception, struggle with reading. On average, they read several grade levels behind their suburban, middle-class peers. None read at grade level. They live in a high-poverty area, their school is at risk of failing, and, as a result, they are at risk of failing in more ways than one. Due to upcoming federal budget cuts to education, they are also facing the prospect of highly diminished resources for the rest of the year and the years to come.
Nevertheless, these students are creative and bright, and they are capable of incredible academic achievement.
