My students come from a diverse background of needs and experiences. Many of them view their education as another stepping stone, a requirement, and an uncomfortable institution where they are not able to access the things that interest them. As a new teacher, unfortunately I do not have an accumulation of supplies to help my students access material in the ways that are best for them, nor have I been able to fully create a comfortable space for them to work and grow, a space where they enjoy coming to and learn in a calm, relaxing environment. The primary purpose of this project is to provide my students with comfortable seating to read and write in, removing one more barrier for them to access their learning. It also will provide them with books that are desperately needed both at their level, and about subjects and people that interest them, as well as several in their native languages. Being able to provide these, as well as the adaptations to keep them focused on their reading, would be a huge support to getting them excited about literacy.
