Books such as "The Hate U Give,” “Turtles All the Way Down", "Dear Martin", and "Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda" give students the opportunity to see themselves represented in modern literature. These books are also great tools to create more empathetic and understanding people.
When a student makes a connection with a book, they become more connected to the issues facing them in the world. We will be using these books during our Book Club meetings. Without these books, the 50+ students will have to rotate the limited copies that I have and may lose interest in reading by the time it is their "turn". These books will give me the opportunity to have discussions with my students that will open them up to the issues that they face on a daily basis.
