When students are told what to read, they are reluctant- this pushes students away from books rather than towards them. Having a selection of books will allow students to choose which topics interest them the most, which goes a long way towards engaging the students in their readings. The Outsiders, Holes, and Ender's Game are classic titles which have been chosen with my students in mind.
In a world where it is becoming the norm to put down the book and turn on the TV, it is increasingly important to provide students opportunities to stimulate their minds with printed material.
With these books- my students will read independently, have discussions with their peers in literacy circles, strengthen their reading and critical thinking skills, and write comparative reviews using higher-order thinking questions.
My students are ready and eager to learn- they just need the resources to be able to do so. Your support would go a long way towards helping my students become stronger thinkers and more well-rounded young adults.
