I have two class rules: Be Smart, Be Kind. My students work hard at both of these each day. We are a Title 1 School where the poverty rate warrants free lunch and breakfast for all students. Full bellies make being smart and kind a little easier.
My students come from many countries and cultures Some have experienced too much in their young lives.
I have only three students who read at grade level, but my expectations for all are high, and I encourage their expectations for themselves to be high as well. We read and write a lot in our "Burt's Bibliophiles" class!
English is a newer language for many of my students and, sadly, it's the only language I speak. However, my more proficient English speakers are quick to jump in and translate, or help clarify, for their struggling peers. This happens often and makes my teacher-heart burst.
Thank you for contributing to our success!
