School and home are ideally both be safe spaces, but for many of my students, school is their only safe space. It is where they interact, eat, play, and more often than not, sleep through class, because home is uncertain. Making a connection between school, home, and family through activities and materials that can be easily transported and effectively used in all spaces, creates a safer atmosphere anywhere my students find themselves. Having something familiar that can go all the places, can provide a link and helps balance out the differences many kids find between home and school.
