Kinetic Sand is a sand-like substance that is easily moldable but also free flowing. Kinetic sand will harden when it is squeezed but will turn back into a flowing sand when released. learners, like many of my kindergarten students, tend to be hands on learners. Kinetic sand offers a wide variety of benefits to all students who engage with it.
Kinetic sand helps to develop fine motor skills. Kinetic sand helps students who may be sensitive to tactile or need more tactile experiences. Kinetic sand is also useful in giving young learners those first experiences to practice their drawing and pre-writing skills in a multi- sensory material. Kinetic sand can helps to increase focus and attention span and helps to promote a sense of calmness in students who tend to be a little fidgety or over active in the classroom setting. The main benefit of Kinetic sand that caught my attention the most was the increase in attention. Not only can all the squeezing of the sand strengthen little hands but it can also get the brain ready to learn.
As an early childhood teacher for almost 30 years now, I am always seeking ways to provide my young students with as many opportunities to becoming the best learners they can become as they begin their school journey in becoming life long learners. I plan for my young students to use every day and the sand/water table being a huge asset in my classroom for the above reasons. I also plan to transition the table to water in the spring months for more hands on learning fun.
