Fantastic adventure awaits in the first book in a series that helps struggling readers learn new and difficult multi-syllable words while they are enjoying the novel!
It only takes the first book to hook young readers to devour the next five in the series.
The book series The Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket are fabulous because the author uses multi-syllable vocabulary that are defined in the book. Our school library has 2 each of the first 4 books. When I introduced my class to them, they fought over who got to read what book when. They were overjoyed that they were sounding out and learning new words on their own. We would to have a class set of the first book. Perhaps a few each of the next 4 or 5 books. We will read the first couple of chapters as a class. Then, my students will finish the book independently at their own pace while applying assigned important reading comprehension skills.
Currently, only two students can get the first book from our school library. I never get to hook an entire class. It discourages them to have to wait for each other to finish the first book.
