Providing our students a sand box to play in during recess time, not only benefits their cognitive development but it also gives them opportunities to expand their imagination. Creativity will spark when role playing and developing their own stories. They will learn about mathematical concepts, new language skills, and even problem solving skills when participating in play with their peers. Children are more likely to communicate their wants and needs because they are provided opportunities where social interactions are inevitable.
Early childhood education focuses on learning through play, the sand box will allow our students to gain more knowledge that would otherwise be absent. It even provides our inclusive students an opportunity to communicate non-verbally. Everyone will have a chance to develop and solidify their use of social skills, ranging from sharing toy buckets to waiting their turn. The sand box is going to be an overall therapeutic experience for our little ones.
