We have adopted a reader's/writer's workshop model in our classroom this year. CHOICE is a key component. I am getting books into the hands of my students as fast as I can, but I can't keep up with their appetite! Moreover, I need more contemporary titles that reflect the diverse makeup and backgrounds of my students.
Books can be a mirror and a window - they can act as a glimpse into a life you've never imagined and a glimpse into the soul of another. More importantly, books can also be a mirror, a place wherein you can see yourself and your culture reflected and discover that you are not alone - critical to adolescent students. I want to offer my students a myriad of windows and mirrors to experience in my classroom!
