The pandemic has created unique challenges in math achievement among my fourth grade students. During the early days of the pandemic when students were learning remotely for nearly a quarter of the school year, my students were still in the primary grades and developing critical understanding of basic math concepts. As a result, many students are still trying to solidify foundational understanding of smaller numbers and how our base-10 system works even as our fourth grade standards call for students to work with numbers to a million and fractional units.
These hands on learning tools will help close the gaps in math knowledge that are present in our grade level due to the pandemic, and will support my students in meeting grade level standards. With these manipulatives, we will be able to make learning concrete at the whole class, small group, and individual level. They will allow me to address holes in students' math understanding while we continue to work on grade level math standards. Further, math manipulatives will engage the students and increase their depth of knowledge. Additionally, their retention will increase and they will be able to meet their math goals.
