The use of hands-on engineering and math materials in my classroom will engage and grow my students' capacity in math and science. Our classroom lacks both math and science materials which are hands-on and required problem-solving thinking.
These materials will increase the students' understanding of math and engineering concepts as well as their engagement in learning because they will be having fun while they learn.
Our current math program is long on worksheets and short on math manipulatives which build students' understanding of math concepts visually and spatially. The manipulatives I have requested will help students engage in the math learning and understand it at a much deeper level. Being able to manipulate concrete objects is essential to mathematical learning at a kindergarten level.
The mobile STEM cart will allow my students to have multiple engineering challenges that are age appropriate. Engineering is a perfect activity in a kindergarten classroom as it takes takes young children's natural love of play and combines it with the application of math and science in a problem solving activity. Children grow their perseverance and understanding that mistakes are just a part of the learning process through the use of these materials.
