I work with my students in whole groups, small groups and as individuals each school day. For our whole group lessons, we sit on the floor at the front of the classroom. Sitting together on the floor allows for greater engagement. During these whole group lessons we often take time to "turn and talk" so that students can discuss their learning with classmates. I assign students specific spots on the floor so that during this turn and talk time they are paired with appropriately leveled students.
I need a rug for them to sit on that delineates each students' place in order to create a greater feeling of personal learning space. Each student will have a square that will be their "place." This place will be used for whole group lessons in both reading and math.
