Students will receive a comprehensive ceramics program through various clay lessons. The ceramics unit is part of my curriculum. Students look forward to creating a piece of art that they can use. Students will learn some hand building techniques which will teach them how to score and slip to attach pieces to their clay creation. They will also learn surface decorating techniques using clay itself and glaze. In addition, 8th graders will learn how to use the pottery wheel. They will learn how to center, raise a vessel and shape it. Students love to create bowls and mugs so that they can use them after it is fired and glazed. This is a really rewarding project. Students feel pride and joy in being able to create an art piece out of clay.
