My students need to be reminded that they are special, strong, and capable. In order to help them on that path, my therapy room book and material library needs to grow to include stories that show diversity in the characters and themes.
My students are beautifully diverse in culture, ethnicity, and religion. I am a speech therapist who does not share the background of any of the students on her caseload. I want to ensure that my students see themselves in the materials that I show them. Books and craft activities that focus on children and families who are Muslim, African American, or Hispanic will allow my students to recognize their own cultures and backgrounds, while additionally giving them access to learn about ones that are not their own.
