This trip will be a culmination of a year studying art during the GATE Academy. I created "tactile" art lessons, because one of our students in visually impaired. I wanted her to be able to fully experience the joy of learning about and creating art. "Tactile" Art allows the student to manipulate clay, buttons, and paint with their hands. I also felt it would be an opportunity for my other students to experience art in a new way.
We will delve into the question, "What is Art", learn about Zuni Pottery, Found Art, and Finger painting. After watching a video on what is art, they decided art should evoke emotion. We have a guest potter coming in to lead the students in creating pots. After looking at and analyzing Found Art, they will be creating their own pieces using painted canvases and buttons. They will experience the art of famous finger paint artists and then make their own creation. At the Academy, we stress we are not copying artists but making our own creations and finding our own artistic voice.
My students have raised all the money for the art supplies. We plan on ending the year with the field trip to LACMA and holding our own art show at school to share the work that was created.
