I am implementing steps to rekindle the flame of reading in my students. I have many struggling readers who have simply lost their excitement and wonder of reading good books. My strategy is to read to my students little snippets of quality fiction and non-fiction titles and let them try different books so that each student may find a good fit for themselves.
My students need good quality works of literature in their hands that are easily accessible. Please help me make this happen for them. I have recently cleaned out and reorganized my classroom library by weeding out old outdated materials. We are in dire need of multicultural books and more modern titles to which students can relate.
My students have all been challenged to read 30 books of different genres this school year. I have decided to mostly abandon the use of AR and any other incentive program so that students will read for intrinsic reasons rather than for a trinket. They are very motivated by this challenge and are ready to get their hands on some great books!
