Flexible seating teaches my students to respect themselves, others, and their classroom community. Whether it is during whole group lessons or independent work time, if students are given choices in where and how they are able to work it increases their motivation significantly. My students are working on making good choices for their own learning styles, and I think that flexible seating fits right into this idea! We are always looking at ways to improve our work habits. Making sure that we are comfortable and working in a space that is conducive to learning helps students absorb as much knowledge as possible on a daily basis!
When a student gets to pick their own seat, it gives the student a sense of ownership over their learning. This helps keep students motivated and engaged in what they are learning for longer periods of time. The goal is to help students do their best work each day! Allowing students to work with different chairs like balance ball chairs, wobble chairs, cushions, and stools give students different ways to work at a desk. Students can also get comfortable on the floor with yoga mats and cushions, or they can stand while they work using the mobile carts. I picked different seating options that would appeal to my students after observing how each student works best throughout the year. I am confident that this flexible seating will help keep my classes involved without becoming a distraction!
