Students are required to whisper read for 20 minutes daily to improve phonics/decoding and fluency skills. It gets very noisy and hard to concentrate on what you are reading when there is a lot of other noises around you. I currently have four whisper phones that students take turns using. This project will allow me to purchase enough whisper phones for every student in my class to use and can be used for many years to come. I have seen that students who are using these devices are excited to actually attempt to read the words on the page and enjoy hearing themselves read. Many students are fearful to read out loud in class and feel embarrassed when they make mistakes; so they give up before they have even tried. The purchase and use of these devices should also improve comprehension as some students need to hear the text in order for it to make sense. Students can become better readers when they are given the opportunity to read out loud.
