I work with very young students who are constantly worried about their parents being deported, and they bring those fear and shy voices into the classroom. The students tend to speak in a very low voice and shy away from fun academic learning. With hands-on materials, the students are invited to participate and help lead with the teacher. They get to hold the tools and make connections that may be too difficult for them to visualize on paper. With the microphones, they can be heard across the room, and the more we practice, the more confidence they gain.
With the warm atmosphere we create throughout the school year, they begin to share their writing and their thoughts, and they begin to realize that they have a voice; a wonderful and beautiful voice. They learn to put the fears of life behind them, and they begin to enjoy their academic life. They become storytellers, little teachers, and of course, sometimes even little jokesters, and they start to grow into strong children because they learn to find their voice in their very difficult life.
