Writing on a grungey, cracked, small desk that tips over when you try to reach into your backpack for a pen because your knees hit the bottom of it is discouraging, but if they are provided with new, comfortable, ergonomic writing surfaces that enable a student to produce better breathing room, better elbow-room, and the freedom to move the tables around at will, they will be able to write better.
Writing better is thinking better, and thinking better is connecting to the universal themes of English literature better, and that in turn produces a person who can critically think and tell their truth better. And critical thinking truth-tellers become good citizens who improve their communities.
