Entering middle school age, students may begin to experience internal and external conflicts. They are continuously learning how to control their impulses, to manage conflicts with peers/adults appropriately and/or to recognize, identify and express feelings in such a way that it does not interfere with their ability to learn throughout the day. While as a School Adjustment Counselor, our work is to foster and support our students' social and emotional needs by helping them to regulate and control their emotions and behavior. They often lack the materials which can be used to help children learn to self-regulate.
By providing a "calm down" space in the building, our hope is to provide our students with a place where they can go to throughout the day to calm down, refocus, and return to learning. This "calm down" space will include items such as calming music, fidget toys, inflatable furniture, sensory tools, mandalas to help de-escalate and regulate our students in need.
