Culturally relevant literature is an important foundation of my 11th grade English class. Literature that mirrors aspects of teenagers' lives engages reluctant or struggling readers. Elizabeth Acevedo's novel Poet X, written in verse, tells the story of a Dominican girl growing up in Harlem who finds her voice and identity when she discovers the power of poetry.
A class set of Poet X will allow my students to use their passion for poetry to explore their identities and use their voices as agents of change. They will use the text as a model and an inspiration to write and perform their own biographical poetry.
