Group drumming is a wonderful way to make music with upper elementary students. We are learning how to play multi-part rhythm ensembles. While drumming, students are focusing on steady beat, challenging rhythms, and expressive elements of music. Students are able to show creativity through composition and improvisation activities.
My students are also supporting other academic and social skills through group drumming activities. Learning about rhythm in music supports math, particularly fractions and patterning. We are also learning about world cultures in a very hands-on way. My students are also working on their confidence as well as their ability to work in a team when drumming with the ensemble. We currently do not have enough drums for all students to drum together. With the addition of this high-quality Remo Tubano drum, I am one step closer to putting a drum in front of every student!
