The principal at our school has given my Special Education FSC class the green light to collect all the recyclable (plastic, glass, and aluminum) bottles on campus. We have a large campus with a student population of about 1200. The cafeteria serves bottled water. The custodians were recycling with no benefit to students.
What's wrong with this picture? My class felt that students should benefit and wanted to start doing the recycling. They need gloves, pickers, trash bags, recycle trash cans, and a cart. Students will make collection rounds at the start of school, after recess, and after lunch. From what my class has observed there will be alot of recyclables.
My students will graph quantities and types, weigh in pounds/ounces, and multiply redemption quantities. We will also be exploring the social/environmental/financial/health aspects of recycling.
