Few experiences give a primal, hands-on link to our ancestors, and I believe no material is better for this than ceramics. As our art program is young, we don’t have a robust ceramics program.
This air-dry clay will allow my high schoolers to physically connect to the experiences of an Olmec artisan, from the ancient civilization that pre-dates their Mayan and Aztec ancestors. As a majority Latino neighborhood, Fruitvale proudly celebrates Aztec and Mayan heritage. This ceramics project will help students go deeper than DÃa de los Muertos, down to the native roots of their ancestors pre-conquistadors. This connection through earth will interrupt the usual noise of the contemporary world and empower our young warrior intellectuals to sustain their own culture!
