Supporting our classroom with the funds for culturally responsive books will increase my students engagement during read aloud time, allow my students to identify with the characters, and have diverse learning opportunities. In whole group instruction, we will read these books as they are themed with the different heritage months, both during distance learning and while in the classroom.
My goal is to increase student engagement, enthusiasm and joy around literacy in our lowest leveled readers. Students will listen to the stories and participate in discussion about the comprehension of the story. For example, students will be asked to analyze the characters, make text to self, text to text, and text to world connections. This will support students understanding of historically accurate events along with their ability to make connections from the story to their own lives. These skills will help them become engaged readers, thinkers, citizens, and social activists.
