Students today have immediate access to cell phone cameras, but they lack opportunities to explore and understand how the limitations of their cell phone lens dictate much of their message. In my class, as we experience how directors and cinematographers generate emotions, we learn that the choice of lens greatly impacts the image, and ultimately, the message. Analyzing the look and feel of various genres, films, and artists, we get to the point of discovery which reveals the power of the optics. It is at this point that the students want to experiment, yet we are limited to the basic kit lenses that come with the cameras. The lenses requested in this project allow for that next level of sophisticated, emotional storytelling.
