I teach using the flipped classroom strategy, in which half of the class is on computers doing self-paced math activities while the other half is participating in groups as they collaborate with each other to solve problems. A few students will be with me to go over concepts that they need help with. Halfway through the lesson, we switch. In order to have a successful flipped classroom, and for students to develop their own study habits and self-paced learning skills, I need noise-canceling headphones so that those on chromebooks can focus on the work and not hear the noise coming from their peers. Furthermore, I include a lot of videos that teach them how to solve the problems, so those on the chromebooks can pause, take notes, and rewind at their own will. This helps them to own their learning. A set of noise-canceling headphones is especially important to me because they will allow students to focus on their studies. I teach in a low-income neighborhood at a low-performing school, and the majority of the students are classified as minorities in America.
