My students engage and participate more effectively when they have games to play, puzzles to work on, fidgets to sooth and distract. Often they are working through traumatic life events and having such items helps make the process easier. In addition, these supplies help with rapport building and make counseling fun for the students which significantly decreases resistance and anxiety about therapy. As a result they are able to learn and practice skills to manage their emotions in healthy ways which often leads to improved relationships with family and friends, compliance in the classroom, fewer behavioral problems in both school and home settings and contributes to academic success.
