My 13 students are in a grade 3-5 sub-separate classroom for children with autism in a public school in Massachusetts. Each student in the class is on the autism spectrum and might have 1 or more additional disabilities. Autism is a severe disability that hinders their cognitive, emotional, verbal, social and sometimes physical abilities. The students cognitive levels range from those in grades K-2 but these students are placed in grade level classrooms to ensure that they are in an age appropriate setting with peers. Each student in the class has a unique personality and a unique learning style. Despite their disabilities they are very hard working and have made exceptional progress. Even if the progress is at a slow rate these gain are huge successes for them.
