My kindergarten classroom has only one whiteboard that is covered up by a Smartboard. Only one student at a time can be at the Smartboard, which results in students becoming restless and losing interest. I want to create a whiteboard wall where multiple students can come up to the board, at the same time, to solve math problems using the magnetic manipulatives.
Creating this whiteboard wall will increase student engagement as more students will be actively working at the board, problem solving, and collaborating with each other. Kindergarten is where students begin to learn how to communicate academically. They are learning how to speak in complete sentences using academic terminology. Giving them more opportunities to communicate, along with the use of the manipulatives as visuals, will help them reach a higher level of achievement.
Everyone knows the best way to learn is by DOING. My students are capable and ready to do more! They need more problem solving experiences and more opportunities to explain to their peers what they know. The addition of a whiteboard wall to my classroom will do that. The various magnetic manipulatives will allow the students to create a wide variety of scenarios for problem solving. My goal is to build confidence in their ability to communicate their academic knowledge, support them in working collaboratively with their peers, and provide a more enriched learning experience in math.
