During this past year, I have implemented flexible seating in my 7-12 English classroom. It was a very last minute decision that lead to better class management, more classroom space, and harder working students. Because I have such a diverse group of learning styles and personalities, flexible seating allows students to make a choice of how they would like to learn.
Providing students flexible seating options has allowed all students to become active participants in their learning. My room is very small with my largest class size being 15 students. When I had 15 desks, it was very hard to do group projects, to have small group discussions, or to do station work. After getting rid of the desks and adding in flexible seating options, the classroom opened up in the physical space and learning wise.
The options I have chosen will be easy to store or stack. I really want to utilize the floor space, which is why I have chosen the large pillows, stadium seats, and floor pads along with the coffee table creating a great place for small group discussion/work.
The exercise balls and bungee chairs will be offered for the students that like to move.
I only have one standing option right now and would like to offer another standing table because many students like this option, but only 1 or 2 get to use it.
I have seen how choice really motivates my students and makes them more engaged. I hope that these additional options will help the classes grow even more.
