Work task systems are evidence based as a fundamental component for a highly structured special education classroom. These task boxes help students develop independence through completing a task with little to no prompting from an adult. Tasks are educational, functional, and job based activities. All activities that are completed during independent work time have been introduced to the student during one-on-one teacher instruction.
My students need structure, routine, and very clear expectations which is all attained using work task boxes.
My classroom functions different than a general education classroom, and that's okay! My students are some of the most creative, out-of-the-box thinkers I know.
Each student has an Individual Educational Plan, in addition to access to grade level curriculum. I need to create curriculum for my students that is individualized to meet their needs and work task boxes allow me to do that. The ability to work independently is a great life skill to have and is imperative for them to someday get a job and live as independently as possible.
