The best learning occurs when new information can be directly connected to things the students already know. This is especially true when the students have the opportunity to gather new information using a variety of senses and have a chance to explore on their own. For many science topics, it's better for the students to experience a phenomenon first hand before trying to learn the principles behind it. This also taps into the students' natural curiosity and willingness to play when given a chance.
When strong magnets interact with conductors some truly "magical" events can occur. The invisible forces that are produced cause the magnets to levitate or move in slow motion. The students will have a chance to "play" with the magnets on heavy copper plates and describe their findings. They will then suggest real-world uses for what they've found. Finally, they will research Faraday's Law of Induction and Lenz Law to fully explain what they are seeing.
