The research published by Duke and Cervetti, professors at the University of Michigan, reveals that the most effective way to teach primary students is by integrating content throughout the day. We are aligning literacy and science standards in order to deepen students’ knowledge. We will also be able to create a quad text set lesson that will be implemented with students. A quad text set includes four types of literature that are connected by a theme. A unit on plants will be planned around these books and provide many opportunities for students to read, write, listen, and speak. Students will also learn new vocabulary terms and be able to apply them in meaningful ways.
By surrounding students with rich literature and providing the necessary scaffolds to comprehend text (Rogoff 1990), students will feel successful. This success will help develop a LOVE for reading and learning. Students will have multiple reading experiences throughout the day so that they will make academic connections. We will create authentic project-based lessons ensuring that our students will LEARN the content and not just memorize facts. This project allows students to collaborate as they read, write, listen, and speak. As research shows, students learn best when all subjects are connected through interdisciplinary units and students are given opportunities to apply what they have learned through these connected texts.(Duke, Cervetti).
