Having things in the classroom like a love seat and stools will give my students the option of having flexible seating in my classroom, which is a great alternative from just the regular sitting in tables and chairs. Having these items in the corner of the classroom might provide a sense of "being at home on the couch reading a good book". One of the books that I have chosen for my students to read is El Deafo. El Deafo is about a girl that has to wear a hearing device that is huge and strapped to her chest in order to hear. My goal with this book is to show that while they are all kids, some kids may require things in order for them to succeed and they should not be judged because they don't look like the "normal" kid, we practice acceptance of everyone, it starts here in the classroom and will hopefully continue into their adult lives. Another book that I chose is Matilda. Matilda is about a girl who finds the courage to "fight back". My goal is to show my students that when facing adversity, they don't have to settle, they can find the courage to "fight back" and stand up for what they think is fair and just....in a respectful way of course. Ultimately, I want to give my students the best possible atmosphere to learn. Children learn in many different ways, this will provide that opportunity.
