Background: The students at this school work every hard in our targeted, skill based intervention program to learn the skills they need to become better readers. The teachers have classroom libraries. The school has a small library crammed with books. However, many homes are not print-rich, and may speak a different language, be illiterate, or have little parental involvement due to work. Library books get lost, and fees prevent checkout of more books. Classroom libraries stay at school and/or become memorized.
The opportunity to read a new, interesting, level-appropriate books at home, and exchange books between themselves, is something to remind the students of the love and care for them. All of the book titles chosen are grade appropriate, and a specific student was in mind. Many of the students come from homes where they do not learn the typical nursery rhymes, fables, and fairy tales, which were one of the chosen genres. Students being able to choose books will provide continued opportunities for them to enjoy independent reading, to be read to, and/or to read to others.
